Geopolitics, understanding how things fit together
Geopolitics: Understanding the Maps Geography and Political Self Interest A key concept to understanding foreign policy is that you have to think about it in terms of maps.. unless you see how the decisions relate to the geography of the earth the foreign policy decisions might not be easy to understand.. If you ever played that game Risk, where it's all about World Domination.. . each move is directed toward controlling territory and resources, if you don't control them then your competitors will. It's a very narrow world view and doesn't really take into account human inventiveness and personal productivity as these can happen in a genuine free market entrepreneurial civilization. Thinking in terms of choke points and gate keepers might make it easier for the uninitiated to understand. Panama Canal is a choke point, The Panama Canal Company is the gate keeper. Panama Government backs up the Canal Company and the U.S. Military backs up the Panamanian Government. The Persian Gulf is a choke point, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, the Persian Gulf States and Saudi Arabia are the gate keepers. The U.S.is on many different sides as a backup and dispute resolver among these various Gate Keepers. The Suez Canal is a choke point, The Suez Canal Compnay is the gate keeper, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Israel, Yemen and The United States protect the gate keeper. China is moving into position by supporting Sudan for control of the Southern Gateway to the Red Sea. The Bering Straits is a choke point... The US and Siberia are the gate keepers... there are several companies that are in contention over who can amass the economic, social and political power to build a bridge across the straits... this connects to the Oil in Alberta Canada, the North Slope of Alaska and a bridge at the Bering Straits that could be used to carry the pipelines as well as truck and automobile transportation that connects to the Eurasian Transcontinental Transportation Corridor. At this bridge this would connect to the North American Transportation Corridor which is in process North from Yucatan through Mexico City, Monterrey Mexico, Laredo Texas, Alberta Canada, Northwest Territories Canada and through Northern Alaska to the Bridge Head. Then this will connect though Central and South America all the way to the southern most tip of that continent as will another one move South from the Trans Eurasian Corridor through the Middle East to Egypt and South to Cape Town South Africa. At long last this will create a global land route that will connect almost all earth based cultures. Since the corporations who own the governments make the decisions as to how the Choke Points and Gate Keepers interrelate then you need to understand these factors on all three levels, corporate, political and geographical... until you do you are a blind person walking in a dark alley were thieves rule.
